Business Strategy | Define and Develop A Strategy for Your Business

The importance of Business Strategy cannot be overstated. It serves as a foundation for the company alongside Mission and Vision. What is Business Strategy? Business Strategy is the way you will accomplish your mission and vision. How will you fulfill the mission of the company and how you will achieve your mission.

What devices,  procedures, technologies, or other methods will you employ to make your mission and vision a reality?

There are three things you must do in order to develop an appropriate and competitive strategy:

  • Educate
  • Evaluate
  • Execute
Educate yourself on successful companies within your industry that have been able to remain competitive. Stay abreast of current events and never stop learning. I am subscribed to many mailing lists in order to continue educating myself. No matter your formal education, you will be left in the dust if you refuse to continue learning.

My most precious resources are books, articles, and newsletters. Mickie Kennedy, the Owner of eReleases is a marketing machine. By giving his subscribers so much value in his free e-book downloads and newsletters, he almost certainly gains new customers on a continual basis, as well as keeping existing customers happy. His contests, surveys, and articles make him a natural decision when it comes to press release distribution services. Why? Because instead of a PayPal "Thank You" note after the sell and never hearing from the company until another sell, he literally pours knowledge out -- drawing in prospects and retaining existing customers.
It is obvious that in order to fulfill his mission of being the best press release distribution service, he has developed a strategy to not only continue to educate himself on relevant topics important to his market; but to also provide education directly to his market, also positioning himself as an expert. Talk about a winning strategy!

What puzzle pieces will you need to ensure you can deliver what you promise? Evaluate what resources you already have to make your mission and vision possible.   This aids in knowing where your efforts should go and what you still need to make your goals possible. Utilize benchmarks so you can make unbiased assessments.

For example, information found within Guerrilla Marketing Goes Green by Jay Conrad Levinson and Shel Horowitz can be used as a launching pad for strategy. The content is so rich that it requires you to evaluate your company, your policies, and strategic movements that either hinder or enable your marketing goals. (This rich resource can be used as education as well).

Questions I have been forced to ask myself since delving into these two guru's book have helped me develop a strategy for businesses I work with as well as my own. By evaluating the current state and the desired state of your business, you too can develop a comprehensive, results-driven, and relevant strategy for your business.

I just want to make it clear for a moment that I am in no way affiliated with any of the preceding authors or eRelease owner. But in order to provide quality content, they are two resources I have fallen in love with and thought I would share. Every entrepreneur should Google these people.

A strategy for an e-card business could include:
  • incorporate newsletters for their existing clients;
  • offering certain free e-cards for downloads;
  • offering certain categories as free while other popular e-cards can be downloaded for a small fee;
  • a blog dedicated to memorable moments where users can interact and share stories
  • Facebook and Twitter pages dedicated to sharing quotes or a #MushyMoment trend
Some of these strategies are directly tied to selling e-cards but the most effective strategies are those that engage their market and position them as a great place to buy such cards because of all they offer.

Finally, Execution is key. Execution separates the dreamer from the doer. You use the education stage to find out what you need to include in your strategy while the evaluation stage assists in gathering the resources you need to execute the strategy.

It does not matter what your business is, these steps will help you develop a strategy.

Put your strategy to work and continue to repeat the process. You will need to continually educate yourself and evaluate your strategic position in comparison to where you want to be. It is only the persistent that succeed. Great minds and great business ideas have come and gone while persistence is what produces results.
